Chile has agreed to a protocol with China on its fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata) control and eradication programme. The control measures include the use of traps, fumigation, refrigeration and quarantine areas. The protocol establishes mechanisms to determine the programme's efficacy, covering: quarantine periods; quarantine extension areas; recognition of areas free of the pest; and use of quarantine treatments. The Ministry of Agriculture's agricultural and cattle service, the Sag, says that the implementation of "these actions" aims to satisfy the Chinese authorities that Chile's measures meet Chinese standards. The activities started in September this year and should be concluded by July 2008.
